What to Do in Beijing

Beijing is a city of extremes; a place where the extraordinary pales against the super extraordinary and, what with a population of 12 million, it's easy to feel a little lost.

However, it is most definitely worth it to make the effort to get out and have a look around as the place teems with interesting places to visit and memorable sights.

Here are some tips as to what to do in Beijing.

 

Go Karting

Get your indoor go-karting action on at this facility, featuring a 350 meter track and 200cc go karts. The centre also has a restaurant, pool, darts, and foosball to keep you well-fed and entertained. Inquire about special seasonal and student discounts. Open Monday – Friday.

Gongti 100 Bowling

There are quite a few bowling alleys to choose from but Gongti 100 is the biggest and, as the name implies, it features no less than 100 lanes.

For the not so fanatical there are ping pong tables, kids' rides and an arcade.

Beijing Amusement Park

Constructed in 1984, this was the first large modern amusement park in Beijing. Surrounded by a scenic lake, Adults and children alike can indulge themselves by rolling on the Super Train ride or by taking a ride in the Water Car.

Sometimes circuses and stuntmen give fantastic shows in the park. Beijing's equivalent to Disneyland. Open every day.

Golf

'Green opium', as the Chinese refer to the lure of golf, is a growing phenomenon in China and years of economic growth are swelling the ranks of the middle class.

The sport is gaining popularity so rapidly that Beijing fears it is displacing valuable farmland. Beijing itself boasts over 30 golf courses.

Spas

There are many independent downtown spas to choose from in Beijing and most five-star hotels feature this amenity – there is even a spa at the foot of the Great Wall!

Ice Skating

Bei Hai Gongyuan, Qian Hai and the Summer Palace are the most important areas for ice skating in Beijing. You can buy or rent outfits for skating. There are also 'ice cars' which are propelled by ski poles.

Le Cool

Le Cool is Beijing's largest skating rink. It is located in an underground shopping centre connected to the Traders Hotel and the China World Hotel. The rink is open for the skate lovers till midnight.

Hike part of the Great Wall

Not for the faint hearted, several tour companies offer one, two-day and up to two-week tours that accompany hikers along both easy and difficult sections of the Great Wall of China. The wall flanks the northern part of Beijing with various passes and towers.

The main sections include Badaling, Juyongguan, Huanghuacheng, Jiankou, Mutianyu, Gubeikou, Jinshanling, and Simatai. Of these eight sections, five are officially open to the public: Badaling, Juyongguan, Mutianyu, Jinshanling and Simatai, representing more than 100 kilometres renovated and well preserved.

All the five sections of the Great Wall in Beijing have their own unique features.

Rent a bike

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em, all three million of Beijing's bike riders. Biking through Beijing is an experience not to be missed. With special bike traffic lights and several million biking pals you're relatively safe and in good company plus Beijing is as flat as a pancake so you won't even need gears.

Foreigners looking to rent a bike should come with their passport and rental shops will record your passport/identity card number and then ask for a cash deposit. Some might accept your passport/identity card as collateral but such a practice is only asking for trouble.

Rents are low but deposits are high. Always inspect your bike and point out any damage before setting off so you won't be charged for damage you are not responsible for.
