Guilin or the ‘Forest of Sweet Osmanthus’ has been known for its scenic beauty for ages. Quite naturally, it attracts a lot of tourists on a regular basis and any town known for tourism naturally needs to have a number of good dining options.

Canton & Hong Kong Restaurant

Once you've tried a few places for the local cuisine and even a couple of places with a Western menu, Canton and Hong Kong restaurant will serve as a great change as here you can try out some of the most famous Cantonese dishes. This restaurant has been quite popular for a long time, therefore, it is highly recommended.

Laozihao Qingji Rice Noodle Restaurant

A simple restaurant with a long legacy; as the name suggests, it is famous for its rice noodles, which they have been serving for decades now. Located right opposite the bus station, this is a must-visit if you’re serious about trying out as much of the local Guilin cuisine as possible.

Longze Tea House and Restaurant

This place should not only be on the list of good restaurants in Guilin, but also on the list of the most unique places. After all, it is one of the very rare all-vegetarian restaurants in Guilin. Of course, the definition of ‘vegetarian’ might vary from place to place, therefore, do read the menu carefully to understand where fish or eggs are included in the menu.

Midiexiang

This is another great restaurant with a very good Western menu. The good part about this restaurant service is that the staff members speak English too! You should, however, note that they do not accept credit cards; you will have to use Chinese currency to get by here.

Red Apple is a family-run restaurant that is known for local dishes such as tortoise soup and fried rice. This is where you might want to whip out your English-Chinese dictionary and maybe even polish up on your Mandarin a bit.

Sonten's German Bistro

It may be weird to talk about a German when describing Guilin but for those on a week-long vacation to China and looking for some Western food, this place could be just the thing. It serves authentic German cuisine including classics such as haxen, knoedel with German beer, and bratwurst. The best part about this is that even though you're eating German food, you're paying Guilin prices for it.

Xufu Restaurant

This is a good place to try for those looking to explore local delicacies. Since it is a restaurant that specialises in local food you may not find English-speaking staff; therefore have your English-Chinese dictionary on you if you plan to visit this one. Oh, and remember to carry Chinese currency too, as they don't accept credit cards here.

Yiyuan Fandian

This is a great place for those looking to give up their Westernised taste and explore new waters. If you'd like to give spicy dishes a try, it doesn't get better than this. The diced chicken and shuizhu niurou - slices of vegetables and tender beef in a spicy chilli sauce - will leave you in tears, and yet satiated at the same time. You could also try their tangcu cuipi yu, which will calm your palate down with its soothing sweet-and-sour taste. Again, carry cash as they do not accept credit cards.

Yiyuan Restaurant

Famous for its Sichanese menu and a great décor, Yiyuan’s best feature is that it imports all ingredients from Sichuan Province and ensures that the most authentic items from the Sichuan menu are served. The house speciality is carp with hot bean sauce. For Western visitors, another reason to dine here is that the staff members speak English and the menu is also in English. However, the last time we checked, they didn't accept credit cards.

Zaowangye Xiangwei Ju

This restaurant is unique as it serves up some of the most delicious items from the minority cuisines of Yao and Zhuang. Their speciality is in spices and ingredients which they pick fresh from the countryside. Reasonably cheap, the restaurant does not accept credit cards.
