Lijiang is in Yunnan Province, some 570 km northwest of Kunming. It can be reached by air or road. Lijiang is home to the Naxi, descendants of Tibetan nomads and is one of the world’s few remaining matriarchal societies.
The ancient city of Lijiang is overshadowed by the mighty Jade Dragon Snow Range which runs along the western border of the plains. Shandizou, its highest peak, is 5,596 metres high. Lijiang has been a political and cultural centre since the first Yuan Emperor, Kublai Khan established his reign here and the city now plays an important role in commerce between Yunnan, the rest of China, Tibet and India.
