Nanjing Weather Conditions

Nanjing is located in north subtropical zone (monsoon climate area) and has an average temperature of 17.8°C or 64°F. The city enjoys pleasant weather for about 280 days. The end of June marks the beginning of ‘Rainy Plum Season’ in Nanjing. The best time to visit Nanjing is the period between September – November.

Nanjing’s weather can be divided into four distinct seasons – winter and spring, summer and autumn.

Winter and Spring

Winter in Nanjing lasts from late November till end of March. The low temperatures often dip below 0°C/32°F. So it is wise to pack adequate sweaters and winter coats in your baggage. Spring in Nanjing is short.

Summer and Autumn

Summer in the city lasts from the month of May to September. Summer is unbearable, and Nanjing is considered as one of the three ‘furnaces’ of the country. The average summer temperature shoots up more than 35°C or 95°F. The level of humidity also stays very high. The duration of autumn in Nanjing is about two months.

Getting Around Nanjing

Buses, taxis, and metros are the best mode of conveyance for travelling within the city.

Metro

Line 1 of Nanjing metro has 31 stations. It primarily runs in a north-south direction. Starting north from Maigaoqiao station it heads southwards towards Andemen station. From there the line 1 metro splits and the main line heads westwards towards the Olympic Stadium station. The branch line goes further southwards and ends up in China Pharmaceutical University station.

Line 2 of Nanjing metro has 26 stations and runs in an east-west direction. Eighteen of its stations are underground. The remaining eight are either elevated or ground-level stations. Minimum Fare: RMB 2 per person (1-8 stops)

Bus

Air-conditioned buses in Nanjing charge a minimum of RMB 2 per passenger. Standard/Non-AC buses charge a minimum of RMB 1 for each individual. Board the bus from the front and exit from rear doors.

Taxi

Taxis plying between 05:00 - 23:00: RMB 9 (for first 3km), and RMB 2.40 (per kilometer thereafter). Moreover, RMB 1 is added every time as tax.

Taxis plying between 23:00 - 05:00: RMB 9 (for first 3km), and RMB 2.70 (per kilometer thereafter). RMB 1 would be added every time as tax.

Nanjing Travel Tips/ Good to Know

Nanjing is quite a safe place to walk around in, even after dark. The crime rate is low. However, it is always wise to keep your important documents and valuable items inside the hotel in a safe place, before going out.

Nanjing’s summertime can prove very uncomfortable. So remember to pack appropriate clothes including sunglasses and UV protection along with mosquito repellant.

Hygiene standards are pretty high in the city so the chances of getting an infectious disease are very little.

Chinese Packages

Chinese packages only bear the production date and don’t have an expiration dates like western goods so check the production date carefully before buying medicines, perishable foods, etc.

Shopping in Nanjing

Shopping in Nanjing can at times become a little risky due to fake markets and shops. Besides being selective, you need to verify the product’s authenticity before making a final decision.

Do not be too aggressive with Nanjing stall owners as they try to sell their product by any means. If you really do not want to buy their products act diplomatically.

The Jiangsu Provincial People’s Hospital

The Jiangsu Provincial People’s Hospital has a special wing for foreigners, manned by doctors and health staff speaking good English. For minor health problems, every hotel in Nanjing provides a doctor on call.

Tourist Information Centre

The Nanjing Tourist Information Centre is conveniently placed at Confucius Temple. This centre is run by the government.
